Newtown woman about to celebrate 100 years of life

From the Trenton, NJ, Trentonian November 19, 2011

By ARTEMIS COUGHLAN
acoughlan@trentonian.com

NEWTOWN BOROUGH, Pa. — Friends Home resident Betty Fredenburg turns 100 years old next week. A celebration will be held at the nursing home in honor of her birthday on Tuesday.

She has lived through four wars, raised five children, was married three times and survived all of them, she said in her neatly kept room in the historic home in the heart of the borough.

Growing up in the Eddington section of Bensalem Township those days, you walked to and from school in good or bad weather.

"The school is still standing and is located on Route 13 next to Warner's Candies.

It's still there," she reminisced. "It had grades 1 through 4 on the first floor and grades 5 to 8 on the second. We only had to go through the eighth grade."

Her great grandfather fought in the civil war and he lived until he was 98 years old.

She boasts that she has 14 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and 9 great great grandchildren and one great great great granddaughter.

"My oldest son is 82 years old and is having some health problems. I'm lucky to be in this good condition," she said as she sat in her combination walker and seat.

She ran away to get married to her first husband and the father of her first three children at 16 and she lived the majority of her live in that same section of the township, except for a couple years when she moved to Florida: "I knew he was a good man," she said. "Boy, was my father mad at me for getting married."

After her first husband died, she had to take care of her three children and got a job at the Philco radio company and worked in the warranty department of the corporation. When Ford bought Philco, she was retained."

"We then just made the radios that were put in Ford cars," Betty said

She retired from the company when she turned 63 in 1974 after working there for 22 years.

After Florida, she moved back to Bucks County and family members moved herto the Friend's Home home six years ago.

"They're real good to me here," she said of the staff, "great people."

Because she wears a digital hearing aid, it tells her when to replace the battery.

The other morning, an aide said: "She woke up and told everyone that a man was talking to her in her sleep. The hearing aid says 'Time to replace the battery.' She's so funny."

Betty said she was always active and doing something: "I can't stand sitting around even after I retired."

As to her living so long she said "My mother always told me to love people. There's too much hate in this world," Betty said.

"I'm still living. It's nice to live this long. But as you get older things stop working. That bothers me."
