OBIT: Amelia Townely was born April 15, 1858, at Glasgowshire,England - passed away at her home in Pisgah, Iowa, Febr. 25, 1917.She was the adopted daughter of W. M. Townley, Sr.; came toAmerica in 1865 with the family and to Iowa in 1870. She unitedwith the L. D. S. Church in 1870 and remained true in the faith tothe end. In Monona county in 1880 she was united in marriage toJohn J. Conyers, who preceded her Dec. 22, 1911. To the unionfour children were born two whom died in infancy, two survivingare Mrs. Rasmus [Zora] Knudsen of Moorhead and Fred Conyers athome. A girl she raised, Mrs. I Nelson of Moorhead also survivedher. In the year 1912 she moved from the farm to Pisgah where shehas since resided. She was highly respected, loved and adored byall whose pleasure it was to know her and her friends werenumerous. The funeral services were conducted by Elder Joe Lane,Tuesday, from the L. D. S. Church and a large number ofrelatives and friends followed the remains to their last restingplace by the side of her husband in the Preparation cemetery.Thus passed away one of the noblest daughters of the earth -"Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints." -Ps. 116:15

H. La Rue, the subject of thissketch. He was born in Morrow County, Ohio, December 27, 1837, and wasa son of Aaron and Asenath (Harris) La Rue, the former of whom was ason of Isaac La Rue, who came of Revolutionary ancestors residing inVirginia, one at whom, John La Rue, had the honor of having La Ruecounty, Kentucky, named for him. Aaron La Rue grew up in Virginia on afarm and there married the daughter of Jesse and Sarah (Davis) Harris,and there became the father of ten children, the survivors being Mrs.Sang Beatty, of Blairstown, Iowa; Mrs. Harriet McCluer, of Morrison.Illinois; Rev. C. C., of the Christian church, of Benton county, Iowa;William H., our subject; Isaac, a well-known blind teacher, ofBlairstown, Iowa; Thomas P., the president of the Cherokee CountyBank, at Columbus. Kansas: Dr. L. B., of Arkansas; Lewis, an extensivestock owner of Iowa, and mayor of his town; and Edward,who lives inBenton county, Iowa. Mr. La Rue located in Morrow county, Ohio, andlater went to Benton, Iowa, being one of the first settlers in Vinton.This was before any railroads were built in this locality, where heimproved land, and died at the age of eighty-six. He had been a stanchRepublican and both he and wife had been members of the Presbyterianchurch, this belief being inherited from the old church in Scotland.The mother died at the age of eighty-four and she was honored andrespected by all who knew her. Our subject was reared on a farm inOhio, where he lived until he was sixteen, when he accompanied thefamily to Iowa. He received his education in the common schools andfor several succeeding years was engaged in driving stock, going fromBenton, Iowa, to Bureau county, Illinois. In 1861 he enlisted in theTwelfth Illinois Infantry, for three months, later reenlisting inCompany G, in the Thirteenth Iowa Infantry, and took part in thebattles of Shiloh, Corinth, Vicksburg, and other engagements, beingdischarged at Chattanooga, Tennessee, when he returned home to Iowaand for three succeeding years was employed in the railroad shops.Our subject was married to Miss Lovenia Hollander, a native of Lynncounty, Iowa, and a daughter of John and Priscilla (Cox) Hollander,formerly of Tennessee. Of the children of this union, Willie J.Sunnery, born in Gentry county, married Jessie Friend, and they livein Perry, Oklahoma; C. C. lives in Stuart, California; Bert lives inBritish Columbia, where he is employed on a large ranch; and severalchildren have died, two boys in childhood, Gertrude at the age ofseven years, and an infant who was a twin sister of Bert. The devotedmother of these children died in 1887, having been a good and worthywoman. Our subject was again married, his present wife having beenMrs. Elizabeth Davis, the widow of Andrew Davis, a daughter of Johnand Melissa (Overton) Myers. By her first husband Mrs. La Rue was themother of several children. By his second marriage our subject has twochildren, William H. and Paul Aaron, both bright, intelligentchildren. In politics Mr. La Rue is a Populist and one of the bestinformed men of his party in the county, and has been called upon todo much political work, his judgment being highly esteemed. He haslong been connected with the Masonic order and is a firm believer inreligious teaching. He is also a geologist, owning one of the finestprivate collections in the state. He understands the subject and is aninteresting entertainer upon scientific subjects. For many years hehas been an advocate of everything looking to the development of hissection, and is considered a representative citizen of Dale township.
